‘What type of recipe should I submit?’

This is a question I often get when working on a cookbook with a group of folks. While I can’t share our personal suggestions (Yet! Stay on the lookout, though!), I’m happy to share some common themes I see in these cookbooks. This post shares four recipes types perfect for a friend or family member’s cookbook. Have another idea? Your Speciality

You know the one I’m talking about. The one you always make. The one that everyone wants a copy of. The one that even if it’s kind of a pain in the buttocks, you still go through all the efforts to make.

This recipe, your recipe, is a perfect one to share. For me, it’s my Nana’s Coconut Cream Pie. Don’t worry, I’ll share it soon.

An Inside Joke

Sometimes, the best thing you can share is more of a ridiculous memory, and less of an actual recipe. See below.


A Salute to Your Community

The great thing about food is it’s so easily associated with a time and a place. Recipes that are location specific, say a good New England clam chowder or your rendition of the bread pudding from Commander’s Palace, can take you back ages.

So consider the places that represent your relationship with the recipient. Maybe it was the paella from when you traveled abroad together, or those fish tacos you shared from that food truck outside, or that whiskey sour recipe from that mixology place that uses egg whites.

The Classics

The reality is, everyone needs a good meatloaf recipe. Well, okay, vegetarians may not need a meatloaf recipe, but hopefully you see the point here. If all else fails, and you’re not sure what to submit, go back to your traditions – the perfect chocolate chip cookie, homemade tortillas, corn beef and hash. You can’t go wrong with the classics.

These are just a few themes to help when mulling over (oh, maybe a nice mulled cider?) a recipe to submit. The important bit is to remember to have fun and make it personal. Everything else will fall into place.
